Terms of Service

Effective August 30, 2026

1. Agreement

These terms are between you and [Your Legal Name / Company] (“we”), and govern your use of Balm. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Balm.

2. The service

Balm is a private journaling app with an optional AI companion. It is offered on an evolving basis; features may change. Parts of the service may be in beta and provided “as is.”

3. Not a medical or crisis service

Balm and its AI companion are not a substitute for professional medical, psychological, or crisis care, and do not provide diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis or may be a danger to yourself or others, contact your local emergency number or, in the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Never disregard professional advice because of something the app or the AI said.

4. AI-generated content

The companion's responses and reflections are generated by AI and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate. They are for reflection and support only, not professional advice. Use your own judgment.

5. Your account

  • You must be old enough to form a binding contract in your country (at least 13).
  • Keep your login credentials secure; you're responsible for activity on your account.
  • If you enable encryption, your passphrase is yours alone. We cannot reset it or recover encrypted entries if you lose it.

6. Your content

You own what you write. You grant us only the limited permission needed to store and operate the service for you (for example, storing and displaying your entries back to you). Where entries are end-to-end encrypted, we cannot access their contents at all.

7. Acceptable use

Don't use Balm to break the law, infringe others' rights, or attempt to disrupt or reverse-engineer the service.

8. Subscriptions

Balm offers a free tier and may offer paid subscriptions. Pricing, billing, and renewal terms will be presented at purchase. This section applies once paid plans are available.

9. Disclaimers & limitation of liability

The service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for loss of data — including encrypted entries rendered unrecoverable by a lost passphrase.

10. Termination

You may stop using Balm and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [your state/country], without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.

12. Changes

We may update these terms; we'll revise the effective date above and, for material changes, take reasonable steps to notify you.
